Our firm is seeking an accounting professional to join our team based in one of our Alberta office locations (Calgary or Edmonton). This is an in-office role; please indicate your preferred location when applying. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Accounting Manager will be responsible for managing a team of finance professionals and ensuring accurate and timely processing of financial transactions, primarily for our Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver offices.

The successful candidate will provide oversight in a number of areas, including funds held in trust, banking, taxation, and accounts payable. They will maintain regular communication with internal customers including lawyers, management, peers and team members.

Responsibilities include:

  • Trust and Banking:
    • Reviewing monthly trust and operating bank reconciliations
    • Reviewing daily cheques, wires and deposits for operating and trust bank accounts
    • Reviewing and approving electronic wire transactions
    • Assisting with bank account user administration
    • Providing back-up coverage for trust accounting desk
    • Preparing B.C. and Alberta trust filings and Law Society reporting
    • Preparing periodic internal trust reporting requirements
    • Assisting with onboarding of new lawyers
    • Responding to stop payments, void cheques and payment inquiries
    • Responding to trust inquiries
  • Accounts Payable:
    • Assisting with general ledger coding inquiries
    • Reviewing and approving invoices and expense reimbursements
    • Reviewing statements and providing guidance regarding reconciliation of deposit accounts
    • Maintaining vendor relationships
  • System Administration:
    • Maintaining users in certain third-party systems used by the firm
  • Taxation:
    • Reviewing and remitting government tax remittances

Qualifications include:

  • Completion of a degree in accounting or business or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum of five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience supervising a team of professionals
  • Ability to deal with highly confidential material
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Working knowledge of trust accounting rules in accordance with the Law Society of Alberta and British Columbia considered an asset
  • Working knowledge of an integrated accounting system considered an asset
  • Experience in a professional services firm considered an asset
  • Experience with electronic payment methods for accounts payable considered an asset
  • Experience with accounting system implementations or upgrades considered an asset
