The opportunity

TC Energy is seeking a driven Associate to support our Litigation & Employment Law legal group, which provides legal services to all of TC Energy’s business lines. Reporting to the Director, Litigation & Employment Law, you will contribute to our success by providing legal administrate support to the overall department and directly support multiple lawyers. Your helpful and positive attitude and keen eye for detail will be valued in this high pace environment.

What you’ll do

  • Handle sensitive and confidential information in a timely, trustworthy and professional manner

  • Perform critical administrative tasks to support litigation matters, including assisting with the preparation of court and arbitration filings (e.g., pleadings, affidavits, applications, etc.), managing filing and service, booking court reporters, assisting with preparing for questioning, and other aspects of the litigation process

  • Assist with the preparation of other legal documents, correspondence, reports, and submissions

  • Coordinate department budget process, monitor budgetary expenses and prepare team budget forecasts

  • Provide administrative support, including maintaining electronic and hard copy legal files, scheduling meetings and appointments, coordinating travel arrangements, ordering supplies, time recording, preparing expense reports for lawyers

  • Coordinate daily office administrative duties (mail, deliveries, filing, etc.), as well as facilities for meetings, events, training and catering

  • Manage all forms of information using department and Company document management processes

  • Establish internal team administrative processes

  • Support external legal retainer process, including managing internal requests for approval and interfacing with administrative staff at external law firms to manage legal retainers and budgets (invoices, WIP, etc.)

  • Provide leadership in coordination with others to address departmental or interdepartmental tasks; and,

  • Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Post-secondary certification in administration from a recognized institution and/or legal secretarial training

  • Minimum of 6 years of progressive related experience

  • Exceptional computer skills, ideally comprehensive knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as ability to prepare materials utilizing suite of Microsoft tools with minimal supervision and under tight deadlines; and,

  • Excellent proofreading skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience assisting litigation lawyers and familiarity with litigation and arbitration processes

  • Previous experience in an in-house legal setting, including familiarity with budgeting, cost coding and periodic financial and regulatory or other reporting

  • Energetic personality who is a self-starter with the ability to learn and adapt quickly to changing priorities and to find solutions that meeting varying client and departmental needs

  • Proven organizational, planning and prioritization skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage tight deadlines and build, maintain and manage filing systems

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with the capability to manage information and correspondence at all levels of the organization

  • Exceptional judgement and discretion when dealing with internal and external parties particularly when dealing with confidential matters

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a professional demeanor and client focus

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, resourceful, able to solve problems

  • Exercises mature judgement and works co-operatively and effectively with both internal and external stakeholders

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Experience with iManage, TeamConnect and SAP.
