What can I expect to do in this role? 

About the Job 
 
As part of the Advisory Services team, you will ensure effective tax administration and provide valuable support, advice and subject matter expertise within the ministry. Every day will be a little different, but you can expect it to include activities like: 
 
• Research complex laws and regulations related to taxes and benefits 
• Advise internal and external clients on tax and benefits issues through written and verbal communications 
• Identify and solve legislative and regulatory problems for internal clients and executives 
• Write reports and briefs on legislative, administrative, and policy issues 
• Represent the ministry in meetings, working groups and committees and work with various stakeholders to support tax and benefits programs 
• Provide guidance and support to junior staff on complex cases or projects 
 
How do I qualify? 

Mandatory 

For the designated bilingual position, you must possess oral and written French language skills at the advanced level. Your proficiency level will be confirmed before hire. 
 
Communication, collaboration and consultation skills: 

You demonstrate: 
• communication skills to discuss complex legislative and regulatory issues with taxpayers or their representatives and prepare and lead briefings for senior officials. 
• collaboration skills to proactively work with staff, management and stakeholders on issues and projects, including sensitive and contentious matters. 
• ability to prepare exceptional quality written interpretative opinions, reports, publications, and correspondence for the Minister of Finance. 
• consultation and negotiation skills to address and resolve taxation issues with a variety of stakeholders. 
 
Analytical, Research and Problem-Solving Skills: 

You can: 
• conduct self-directed research into various legislative and related tax administration issues and cases. 
• research, review, and interpret complex legislation and tax/credit/benefit tax administration policies and guidelines. 
• evaluate financial and business transactions to assess legislative and policy applications and develop opinions and recommendations. 
• identify problems and inconsistencies in existing law or policy to make recommendations for changes to legislation or program administration. 
 
Tax Legislation, Financial and Project Management Knowledge: 

You have knowledge of: 
• tax/credit/benefit legislation and regulations to research, interpret and apply legislation and provide analysis and advice on related issues. 
• legislative development and policy-making process to develop and evaluate legislative and policy proposals. 
• financial, accounting, and auditing principles, practices and procedures. 
• project management techniques to lead, plan and implement projects related to complex tax and benefits administration projects and initiatives.
