Lerners is seeking a Law Clerk to support our Specialty Risk and Insurance practice group in the Toronto, Ontario office. The ideal candidate will have over 10 (ten) years of experience working in a similar position handling complex multi-party litigation. Class action defence, mass tort and large public entity defence file experience will be an asset. Experience in a plaintiff personal injury or class action practice will also be considered. This is a Hybrid position and requires a minimum of 3 days in office or as required.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Communicating with clients to obtain documents;
  • Reviewing, summarizing, and indexing productions, records and medical records;
  • Drafting pleadings, motions, affidavits of documents, status reports, etc.;
  • Maintaining communication and updates with clients including scheduling meetings and assisting with regular reporting to clients;
  • Communicating with plaintiffs' and co-defendants' counsel to obtain appropriate productions;
  • Managing large document file productions and medicals in Relativity;
  • Ensuring files are prepared for Examinations for Discovery, including preparing of chronologies and/or medical summaries;
  • Identifying appropriate experts, and retaining and communicating with them;
  • Reviewing discovery transcripts and following up for and tracking undertakings;
  • preparing for trial, including Pre-Trial, Trial, Pre-Hearing and Hearing preparation;
  • Managing electronic hearings and trials;
  • Maintaining the electronic Bring Forward database;
  • Drafting closing documents including draft orders, consents, and releases;
  • Arranging surveillance;
  • Maintaining files.

Qualifications:

  • At least ten (10) years of experience as a Law Clerk, with preference for experience in Specialty Risk and Insurance and/or class action defence, mass tort/ large public entity defence or similar practice area requiring initiative and drive to move files forward;
  • Strong organizational skills, time management skills, and attention to detail;
  • A driver's licence and a car to travel to meetings with clients and court hearings as required;
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to work directly with institutional clients and their employees
  • A keen ability to work independently and as part of a fast-paced team;
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines; and
  • Significant experience using document management systems including RelativityOne and iManage to organize and analyze large document and data files for efficient use and presentation.
