Nature and Scope: The Legal Assistant performs a wide variety of responsible, complex and confidential administrative and technical duties. This position requires a high degree of initiative, tact and efficiency in the areas of organizational skills, written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills and computer skills. The incumbent must possess ingenuity in carrying out the functions of the position and must be able to organize and work under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Maintenance of confidentiality is of utmost importance.
During the absence of the Senior Legal Counsel, the incumbent must use skill and precision in ensuring that matters requiring attention are referenced to the delegated authority and handled in an expeditious manner where required.
The Legal Assistant contributes to good public and interagency relations by determining the nature of the requests and problems involved and channels inquiries to the appropriate personnel or departments. The Legal Assistant provides routine factual information /data to other internal and external departments.
The incumbent is responsible to provide legal and Labour relations research to the office of the Senior Legal Counsel in addition to the Labour Relations department where requested.
Work Environment: The majority of the day is spent at a desk, with continuous exposure to computer equipment and artificial lighting. A high level of concentration and accuracy is required at all times. A moderate to high degree of mental stress is encountered on a daily basis, to achieve deadlines and cope with confrontational interactions with clients and the general public.
